Winter Words of Wisdom
Along with winter and flurries, come many dangers to be aware of in Colorado. The first step of precaution is to make sure your animal has been examined by your veterinarian, and that there are no health issues that may be compromised in the cold.
Winter Warnings
Antifreeze: has a very toxic ingredient called ethylene glycol which causes damage to the kidneys and can be fatal when ingested. Animals are attracted to it because it has a sweet taste. If your animal ingest or you think it has ingested ANY antifreeze call your vet immeditley. "Sierra" is a pet safe antifreeze because it uses proplyene glycol instead of ethyleneglycol, it is sold at most general retail and car stores.
Check Paws: Always check your pet's paws for ice balls and cracks.
Ice and Snow melt products: Many of these products are harmful and can cause chemical burns on paws. Ingestions from licking their paws, can possibly cause intestinal upset causing them to vomit. Calcium Chloride is the harmful ingredient, it can also cause skin and eye irritation. Make sure to get pet friendly products such as "Safe Paw" or others found at Petsmart.
Car Engines: Cats love to curl up in warm places so check your care engines before turning your car on. They can get seriously injured or killed if they are under your hood.
Lakes and Ponds: Be very careful around lakes and ponds especially if your animal is off leash. They love to chase animals on the ice and can fall through and get stuck under the ice. If your animal does get stuck , call 911- DO NOT JUMP IN AFTER THEM.
Fires and Heaters: Keep an eye on you animals around heat sources, they can get burned or knock over heaters causing fire dangers.
Christmas Decor: Christmas trees, lights, ornaments and plants are fun to play with, but can be very dangerous in many ways. PLEASE JUST KEEP THEM OUT OF REACH.
DON'T FORGET PETS CAN GET FROST BITE TOO, IF IT'S TOO COLD FOR YOU IT'S PROBABLY TOO COLD FOR THEM TO BE OUTSIDE WITHOUT ANY PROTECTION AND SHELTER.
ALWAYS MAKE SURE THEY HAVE FRESH NOT FROZEN WATER , SHELTER AND DRY BEDDING, IF SHORT HAIRED A SWEATER IS A GREAT IDEA.

Summer Tips
Fleas, ticks and mosquitos bring harmful diseases with them such as tapeworms, roundworms, lymes disease, heartworm infestations and many more. Some of these can become fatal to your pets so, please protect your pets and family with prevenative products. Call you vet for more details on which product may best suit your pet!
The "Bugs of Summer" can also be harmful to childern if your pet brings them into your home- so keep everyone in your family safe and don't forget to give your pets their preventative medications.

Also, don't forget the heat- it is harmful to our pets too.
1. Always keep fresh water availale to them
2.DO NOT LEAVE THEM IN A HOT CAR
3.Be careful on pavement, pets can burn their paws on the hot black pavement
4. Make sure they have shade and shelter from the hot sun.
